My favorite: G-dragon

Usually I find myself not being able to readily respond to questions like “Who’s your favorite celebrity?”. It’s not that I don’t like to reveal my preferences or anything, but throughout the majority of my life I’ve never really had a personal favorite in mind. As a matter of fact, I’ve found myself frequently shunning the topic of celebrities and whatnot, since I used to associate any “hot topic” in the media with… corruption. I don’t know why I used to think this way (maybe because my parents always used tell me to stop watching TV shows? I really don’t know), especially considering how I now love to talk to about one of my favorite Korean singers–G-dragon of the idol group Big Bang.

Most of my friends know that I’m a huge fan of G-dragon. Oftentimes people even ask me if I can please make my MSN display picture something other than a cute picture of him (although most of the time they’re saying that with a playful tone… I hope? ha ha). But believe me, I’ve actually never been to any of Big Bang’s concerts, nor have I ever registered as a member of their Internet Fan Cafe. I think that the main issue’s time–perhaps way after applications are done and senior year is coming to a close, I would absolutely love to attend one of their concerts with my friends (although Korean teenage girl fans are insanely, ferociously fast when it comes to making online reservations and I heard that it’s extremely hard to obtain tickets…).

I don’t know what makes him so attractive–it’s not that he’s overly handsome, nor does he pass the Korean ideal height of 180 centimeters. He takes pride in his producing skills, as most of Big Bang’s songs that proved to be extremely popular hits were all made by him, yet I’d have to agree with many others that some of his songs do seem quite heavily influenced by Western artists.

I think it all boils down to this–G-dragon is a really unique, hardworking individual. He pursues his own style, and is never ashamed nor afraid in doing that. Again, I’d say that his skills as a producer are not as superb, but the way he dresses and plays around with different styles of music makes me believe that he does really deserve much kudos for being such a daredevil. For instance, the song “Lie” was extremely popular for its simple piano melody playing in the background, as well as the song’s overall catchy tune. However, people started to accuse Big Bang of having copied Free TEMPO’s “Sky High,” as the piano melodies for both sound very similar. Fans of both sides must have obviously not felt good about this issue, but I think this is just one instance that shows how Big Bang (or more specifically, G-dragon, as he produced this song) pursues various styles of music, because it is now said that the accusations probably arose because electronica was not a familiar music genre in Korea yet and thus this led Koreans to erroneously and rashly conclude that “Lie” was a copy of “Sky High”.

But enough with the music. Here are some photos of G-dragon that show his individuality regarding fashion and hair styles:

The scarf!

One huge fad he brought to Korea was the whole practice of draping a scarf around one’s neck so that it roughly resembles a triangle (forgive my horrible explanation, but you can see what I mean in the picture above!). I cannot list how many countless celebrities started to follow this trend after G-dragon first came up with it on Korean TV shows.

Some more “scarf-related” pictures:

Other than the entire “scarf fad” is also the combination of tight pants and high-top sneakers. Lots of people still argue that G-dragon just borrowed his dressing style from the Japanese, and I’d agree that there’s absolutely nothing incorrect with this statement, but it’s also true that G-dragon was one of the those few who were “brave” enough to try this new fashion style in Korea before others did. If one were to dress like he currently does in the middle of Seoul roughly five years ago, people would have surely thought that he or she was a bit more than being just “eccentric”.

Look at all thsoe high-top sneakers he has! And who, other than GD, could possibly even dare to wear a pair of hot pink pants?

Last but not least is his hair style. Out of all of the members in Big Bang, it is obviously G-dragon who changes his hair most frequently. I’d have to admit that sometimes he has made some bad choices, but then again, I believe that we must applaud him for always being so brave in pursuing such unconventional images.

For instance, would you have been able to pull off, or even think of pulling off, something like this?

The bowl cut

Or even this?

Looking at all the photos above, I think I can safely make the conclusion that I tend to adore and favor unique, strongly individual people–people just like G-dragon. :D

But before I end my post, here’s a picture which I think really shows his creative, daring side, along with an audio file of his song “This Love,” which is a remake version of Maroon 5′s “This Love”.
